Electro technical

In industrial automation we use the EN IEC 60204-1:2016 as standard for electrical installations in machinery.
A lot of designers use there experience to determine the wire cross sectional area.
Based on the amount of current through a wire, in a table you can find the cross sectional area which can carry this current.
The amount of possible voltage drop is often overlooked. In the EN IEC 60204-1:2016 article 12.5 is stated that the voltage drop
from supply to the "user" my not exceed the 5%.
A bigger cross sectional area could contribute to a lower voltage drop.
To make sure you comply to this requirement, you shall calculate the cross sectional area of the needed wire.

Simplifying the calculations in electrical systems you can download a calculation tool here.

In annex B from the EN IEC 60204-1 you find an enquiry form for the electrical equipment of machines. It is recommended that the following information be provided by the intended user of the equipment. It can facilitate an agreement between the user and supplier on basic conditions and additional user requirements to enable proper design, application and utilization of the electrical equipment of the machine.
